Brocade, Sketch – private commission for Mr. Stefano Gabbanas seaside
resort at Portofino, Italy

Brocade is a weaving method whose tradition goes back
to the early middle age. By the use of golden and silver threats the fabric has a unique glimmer that explains its enormous popularity in fashion design especially during
the Renaissance and Baroque.

Optic fibres:
To set this antique technique into a new context, the
glance of the fabric is made by optic fibres, instead of
golden threats. The fibres are woven in the traditional
way. Connected to a colour changing light source they
are transmitting the light and letting the illuminated
pattern appear. Depending on the colour of the light
and the daylight the pattern shines more or less intense.

Neon tubes:
Regarding the neon tubes as threats they offer the
possibility to weave with the light itself. With different
channels it is possible to switch the light sources
individually on and off. The result is a play of different
brocade-inspired patterns.
